A new Channel 4 series, Escape to Florida, is offering viewers a fascinating look at why thousands of Britons are trading grey skies and rising costs for life in America’s Sunshine State. The programme follows expats who have built new lives across Florida, revealing the lifestyle, career opportunities, and culture shocks that come with relocating across the Atlantic.

With an estimated 400,000 Brits now living in Florida, the series explores how the state has become one of the most popular destinations for UK expats seeking sunshine, business opportunities, and a slower pace of life.

One of the biggest reasons Brits are drawn to Florida is simple: the weather. With year-round sunshine, beaches, palm trees, and outdoor living, the state offers a dramatic contrast to the UK climate.

The show highlights how many expats embrace a more relaxed lifestyle after moving. Whether it is waterfront living, brunch culture, or spending weekends at the beach, many featured in the programme say Florida allows them to enjoy a better work-life balance.

Miami Beach resident Neasa Gallagher describes the city as a place where individuality thrives. From dogs riding in strollers to early-morning coffee trips to nightclubs, she explains that Florida encourages people to be bold, expressive, and unconventional.

For many viewers, the lifestyle on display feels worlds away from the routines and pressures associated with life back home.

The series also reveals that Florida is not just about sunshine and holidays. For many expats, it represents a major business opportunity.

Plastic surgeon Sidhbh Gallagher moved to the United States after training in Ireland because she believed the opportunities for women in surgery were stronger in America. She now runs a successful cosmetic surgery practice in Miami and says doctors in the US can earn significantly more than in Europe.

Meanwhile, former Manchester businessman Martin Thomas relocated after retiring early and later opened the Best of British pub in Clermont. His venue has become a gathering place for homesick Brits craving familiar comforts such as fish and chips, Cadbury chocolate, and proper English breakfasts.

The programme shows how Florida’s lower taxes and business-friendly environment continue to attract entrepreneurs looking for a fresh start.

Although many expats move to Florida for a new beginning, the series makes clear that they often maintain strong connections to British culture.

At Martin’s pub, Premier League football matches are screened while guests enjoy afternoon tea and imported British snacks. British products remain hugely popular with both expats and curious Americans, including classics like Walker’s crisps and Heinz baked beans.

Long-time resident Denise Noles, who first bought property in Florida during the 1970s, recalls how rare British accents once were in the area. Today, she says Brits are everywhere, particularly around Orlando and other tourist hotspots.

The show suggests that Florida has become a kind of second home for many UK families, with several generations now living side by side in the state.

Despite the glamorous image, Escape to Florida also highlights the challenges of moving abroad. Obtaining visas can be expensive and time-consuming, while changing exchange rates have made buying property more difficult for British migrants in recent years.

Some expats also admit that homesickness never fully disappears, even after decades overseas.

Still, the overall message of the series is clear: for many Brits, Florida offers the chance to reinvent themselves. Whether they move for career growth, retirement, family, or simply the sunshine, the state continues to represent freedom, opportunity, and adventure for thousands making the leap across the Atlantic.
